17David sang this lament over Saul and over Jonathan his son.18He commanded them to teach the sons of Judah: "The bow—behold, it is written in the Book of the Upright."19How have the mighty men of Israel fallen! The glory is profaned on your high places!20Do not tell it in Gath; do not announce it in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult.21Mountains of Gilboa, no dew or rain upon you, fields of the contribution—for there the shield of mighty men was defiled, the shield of Saul, without anointing in oil.22From the blood of the slain, from the fatness of the mighty men, the bow of Jonathan did not turn back backward, and the sword of Saul did not return empty.23Saul and Jonathan, the beloved and the pleasant ones, in their life and in their death they were not separated; they were swifter than eagles, they were mightier than lions.24Daughters of Israel, weep for Saul, who clothed you in scarlet with delights, who brought gold ornaments on your clothing.25How have mighty men fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan is slain on your high places.26I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan. You have been very pleasant to me. Your love to me has been wonderful, more than the love of women.27How the mighty ones have fallen, and the implements of warfare have perished!
